1) Dates and Times
a. The competition runs from
Saturday, April 4, 2009, 4:00pm through Sunday, April 5, 2009, 2:00pm.
b. The theme of the competition will be given out at 4:00pm sharp
on Saturday, April 4, 2009. With that the competition starts.
c. Teams have access to the 1938 Lounge, where the
materials and tools provided are kept from 4:00pm till 11:00pm on
Saturday, April 4, 2009 and from 9:00am till 2:00pm on Sunday, April 5, 2009.
d. The construction time of the competition ends at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 5, 2009.
e. The competition ends with a judging ceremony at 3:30pm on Sunday, April 5, 2009.
2) Teams
a. Teams should consist of 3 or 4 members.
b. One team member is the designated team captain and is responsible for all
communications between the team and the organizers of the competition.
c. There is a $10.00 entry fee per person.
d. Each competitor has to sign a liability waiver before the start of the
competition.
3) The Design
a. To build their machines, teams have access to tools and materials provided
in the 1938 Lounge in King's Court English College House.
b. In addition, each team is allowed to purchase additional materials on their
own budget up to an amount of $25.00. Receipts for additional materials have
to be provided upon request.
c. Each design is constrained to a 1m x 1m base. No part of the device is
allowed to extend beyond this limit during operation. There is no height limit.
d. The entire design cannot weigh more than 50kg.
e. The design cannot involve hazardous materials, explosives, chemical reactions
leading to temperatures above room temperature, fire, or live animals.
f. Each design has to accomplish the given task in no fewer than 10 individual
steps.
4) Judging and Prizes
a. The designs will be judged by three SEAS professors. The judges’ decisions
are final.
b. Designs will be judged based on creativity, effectiveness, and
complexity.
c. The three best designs overall will receive prizes.
