Welcome to Civilisation

Kenneth Mackenzie Clark (1903-1983) was a British art historian, an authority on Italian Renaissance art, and a really groovy dancer.

Well, I don't know about the groovy dancer bit, but he definitely was an art historian. And he most certainly was British. Educated at Oxford, he also studied under the faboo Bernard Berenson in Florence.

Sir Ken got to have really cool jobs 'cause he was so good at the whole art historian gig. Among the positions he had were director of the Ashmolean Museum, director of the National Gallery in London, chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain, and the first ever chairman of the Independent Television Authority. It was Sir Ken who was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford, and not Jack Bodell.

Sir Kenneth Clark is perhaps best known for Civilisation, a BBC series hosted by the man himself, which covers all of European Art from the Dark Ages to the 20th century.

If you think Sister Wendy is cool, Sir Kenneth Clark is a god. Not Sister Wendy's God, of course. Perhaps 'god' is too strong of a term. But most definitely semi-divine. In any case, Sir Ken is far worthier of British Art Historian Worship.

Sir Ken is so cool that Monty Python makes fun of him.

Check out Trinity, Sir Ken's old college at Oxford.

Sir Ken would have liked REM. After all, they wrote a song for him.

He also would have liked the Sir Ken Fan Club Newsletter.
