Attacks connected with Hrisi Avgi

The attack on the English School students was horrible - students from the same group had attacked
me last week... They were from EFNE and today Politis newspaper wrote that the attacking students
were connected with Hrisi Avgi, the fascist group in the south. A Greek Cypriot police also told
me that those who had attacked me were connected with Hrisi Avgi. I include a photo...

This photo I took during the verbal attack on me on the 15th of November 2006, as I was crossing
the checkpoint.
I had my international press card in my hand, visible to both the police and the youth in black
from EFNE there and as soon as they saw me coming they started swearing very badly at me like
"g... don g..., "bellos turkos" etc. (They did not do this to me only - whoever crossed
from the northern to the southern part that day from the ledra palace checkpoint, got their share
of swearing and sneering...) the police did not try to stop them. I stood at the checkpoint and
took their photos as one of them was putting up his sleeves to come and hit me...
all this while I had my international press card (a big red one, very visible, given by the
international federation of journalists through cyprus journalists union). They came up to me, as
close as 20 centimeters - only after they came this close, the police stopped them from hitting
me. I did not flinch but continued to try to take their photos while holding my press card. They
continued to swear at me and sneered at me!
Later the same day, as I was returning to the north, one of the policemen at the checkpoint told
me that the group that attacked me had connections with Hrisi Avgi.
The same group after attacking me, on the same day,
attacked the car of Aziz Ener in the vicinity of the Markos Drakos statue, hitting the car with
the flags they had in their hands. Aziz Ener is
member of the executive board of BASIN-SEN - the press workers trade union in the northern part.
