Cypriot journalists, Sevgul Uludag and Makarios Drusiotis got `2005 Press Freedom Award` of Reporters Without Borders Austria Section, for their articles questioning the recent history of Cyprus. The award ceremony took place on Monday 20th of March, 2006 in Vienna at the Music House where Uludag and Makarios received their awards. OSCE former director of Press Freedom, Mr. Duvet, said in the ceremony that the Cypriot journalists opened gates to the `zones of silence` in Cyprus... He spoke of the articles of Uludag concerning missing persons and mass graves in Cyprus, telling of his own experiences of being invited by Desmond Tutu to attend the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in South Africa... Demet Bilge Ergun from Radikal newspaper also got the Press Freedom Award, for her articles on violence against women in Turkey... Uludag's article `How shall we establish the truth?` published in Hamamboculeri internet magazine in English and ALITHIA in Greek and Drusiotis's article `My haunted country` published in Politis were awarded...Drusiotis made a documentary about `Construction of truth` concerning attacks on Greek Cypriot journalists and activists from the Greek Cypriot administration after the Annan Plan and this documentary also was part of his work being awarded. Sevgul Uludag wrote the books `Cyprus: The Untold Stories` and `Oysters with the missing pearls` in English, Turkish and Greek and this work was part of the reason why she was being awarded. Both books deal with the issue of missing persons and mass graves in Cyprus on both sides. These were interviews with relatives of missing persons published in the Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper YENIDUZEN. Makarios Drusiotis wrote five books on the Cyprus problem concerning the most difficult years of the conflict like `EOKA - The Dark Side` which has been translated into Turkish as well. Currently Uludag writes in Yeniduzen, Phileleftheros and Cyprus Today and Drusiotis is writing in Politis in Cyprus and Eleftherotipia in Greece.
