ExoFleet Personnel
Matthew
Marcus
Exofleet Captain
Command: ExoFleet carrier Resolute.
Marcus was a proud man, and a foolish one. As captain of the
ExoFleet flagship carrier Resolute for the first three years of the
second Neosapien-Terran war, he was also, sadly, one of the most
significant figures of the conflict. Marcus' great misunderstanding of
military strategy makes the fact that he -had- command of a major
ExoFleet ship something of a mystery-- Perhaps the most understandable
explanation to date is that he earned this command during peacetime, as
the Homeworlds Senate was debating whether the ExoFleet was actually
needed at all. With the Resolute's mission so apparently non-essential
the appointment of a captain with little understanding of practical
battle tactics could be considered a reasonable action.
Marcus became infamous among his subordinates for his foolish charges to
Earth. In the mis-conceived attempt by the Senate and the ExoFleet to
eliminate the 'pirate scourge', Admiral Winfield, one of Marcus' few
superiors assigned to the ships of the fleet, was wounded. By this time the
Neosapien forces had taken over the homeworlds, and clearly the only
hope for the Terran race was for the ExoFleet to liberate the
homeworlds. Marcus ordered the entire ExoFleet to Earth at full speed,
and the relatively fast carriers left the support craft behind. Marcus
was unable to recognize that an uncoordinated strike would risk the
destruction of the entire fleet, and when a subordinate began trying to
belay his orders to -explain- to him why this was a foolish action,
Marcus imprisoned him, and led the ExoFleet to a devastating battle
which nearly decimated the bulk of the ExoFleet and left half the
exoframe squadrons stranded on Earth.
Marcus didn't learn from his first tragic charge, however. Three
years later, he and other high-ranking captains of the ExoFleet
committed a mutiny, sending his most dangerous adversaries in the
exofleet to die on suicide missions on Mars, imprisoning Admiral
Winfield and any ExoFleet personnel who refused to cooperate in the
mutiny, and again commanding the fleet to go to Earth. This time,
however, the Neosapien forces had had three years of Earth's, Mars's,
and Venus's resources and Terran manpower to build more ships: The
ExoFleet was again defeated, and the mighty carrier Resolute was
destroyed. Marcus's last act before being disintegrated was to power up
the crippled ship's damaged engines, making it explode close enough to
several large and important Neosapien ships to destroy them.
