Starcraft pricing
What's the best price on StarCraft you've seen so far?  Computer City is supposed to have it for $29.99 starting tomorrow.  CompUSA seems to indicate on their website that it will be selling at their stores for $44.95 with a $30 rebate, which makes it a grand total of $14.95!  That would be crazy.  I'm wondering if that rebate is a misprint or not.  We tried to buy a copy today and it was $49.99, no rebate.  If the price really is $14.95 tomorrow, we'll go back and get the price protection and a few more copies for the buddies.

I also picked up a 24X IDE CD-ROM from Best Buy for $29.99 (after a $30 rebate).   Seems like a good deal, don't you think?

Windows CE 2.1 coming
I never got the CE 2.0 upgrade for my Windows CE machine...and now Windows CE 2.1 is coming.  Incremental upgrades include support for USB, encryption, the FAT file system, and miscellaneous other features.

Infoworld's story

StarCraft
Hey guys, I have to tell you, this game is pretty good.  It's not revolutionary or anything, but the game is clearly well refined and gameplay balance seems to be in there (as it should be, after the incredibly long gestation period). Admittedly, though, balancing three entirely different races is a tall order which deserves kudos.   Games are easy to jump into and very enjoyable, plus it runs in NT (big thumbs up from me on that one, Blizzard!).

I've still seen several comments about Total Annihilation being better than StarCraft.   I'm starting to think I didn't quite get a good look at TA, so I might dig up a copy later from a friend and try it out again.

One of the annoying things is the multiplayer spawning in Starcraft.  If you play with a spawned copy, you can only play in a game created by the person who spawned you.   You'll have to buy a copy if you want to get any amount of multiplayer action on Battle.net in.

Whoa...RR drivers for NT are here
Speak of the devil...check out the readme and download the NT drivers for the RR.   Apparently recording and playback with MJPEG are not supported, but I suppose at least editing is.  It also says multiple CPU's are not supported.  That is not good!

Note that you must also download new drivers for your Mystique (V3.40) to use with the new RR drivers.

No MJPEG support for Windows NT Rainbow Runner?
A rumor at http://www.matroxusers.com says that one of the limitations of the Rainbow Runner support under Windows NT (due very soon) might be no MJPEG support.  If true, that could possibly be one of the most inane things I've ever heard of.  Let's hope it isn't.

L2 cache registry setting
For those of you who tried the L2 cache registry setting mentioned in yesterday's news, could you please post some results on the message board?  I tried it and memory speed results went up significantly.  Definitely a good initial first impression.

Netscape Communicator 5.0 source code released
It's the big one for developers everywhere...now maybe BeOS will get a commercial grade browser for its platform.  Visit http://www.mozilla.org to fill out the licensing agreement and get the source.

WinAMP 1.9
WinAMP 1.9 has been released, with input plug-in support!  That means you can use it as a stand-alone audio player for any kind of audio file, provided you have a plug-in that supports it.

Worldnet now on a "limited" plan
Apparently AT&T Worldnet is shifting their access plan to 150 hours/month + fees for extra time as opposed to the unlimited plan they have now.   It's a shame...goodbye, AT&T!

NT registry entries for L2 cache
I'm pretty sure I mentioned this...oh, some time last year, but I pretty much ignored it since I tried it once and didn't get any sort of performance boost (cursory tests with Winstone).  Basically, NT 4.0 supposedly has a registry entry to correctly set the amount of L2 cache on your system.  It defaults to 256KB, so for 512KB P2's and PPro's there should be a difference if you change the registry entry.   There seems to be a small resurgence regarding this little tidbit of information and the performance effect it has, so I'm going to give it another shot.

You can read about the settings here, find out how to change the registry setting here, and test your memory performance online here.   I actually have 512KB PPro's, so in theory this ought to be useful for me.

So far, so good...
My computer doesn't seem to be acting up anymore, so chalk it up to a bad connection or something like that (well, until something else weird happens, eh?).   In case you didn't notice, there are three new clips from Tekken 3 in the Recent A/V clips section up top...and I've got a couple more reviews planned in the near future.

Quest for Glory 5 demo
You absolutely must surf on over to the Quest for Glory 5 website and pick up the demo.  Short and sweet, but it looks very killer, and I've loved all the Quest for Glory games.  Looks like it has some real potential for multiplayer.

Computer testing and other fun
Getting back to my computer problems...I put the "bad" CPU in the primary CPU slot and ran it for about a day without any problems.  Kind of makes it look like a bad slot or bad connection thing.  So right now, I just put the formerly primary CPU in the secondary slot, and, now, I basically have my old system configuration with the CPU's reversed.  Well, I suppose that if the motherboard is the problem I'm probably OK, since Tyan honors a 2 year warranty with dealers.  If it's the CPU, I'm pretty much screwed, since both CPU's had a 30-day warranty.

Best case scenario:  something got funny with the secondary CPU slot, like a bad connection or charged dust particles under the CPU.  That's not entirely improbable, since I did have that huge fan blowing straight onto both CPU's.
