The parallel mirrors…(*)

Sevgul Uludag

The agenda of the week is clear: secret meetings of Tassos Papadopoulos with Serdar Denktash and Omer Kalyoncu. Secret meetings of Conis from his team with Ergun Olgun from Denktash’s team…

The whole thing is very sick: the way Omer Kalyoncu from CTP had attacked AFRIKA newspaper, blaming them of being `agent provocateurs` when the newspaper had disclosed this information…

I know Omer Kalyoncu for many years and I feel sick when I realize he was trying to hide the truth and was choosing the easy way that most politicians do: attack the press, attack the ones who disclosed it, attack the journalist and keep the truth `safe` in your pocket…

In the old days when CTP was a party of `comradeship` and `discipline` such things did not happen or if it did, I never noticed it in such a dramatical way… In the old days when CTP was struggling for peace, democracy and a common country we knew each other well. Even people from Eroglu’s party UBP would admit that `Those from CTP are really sincere and honest people…` This was one of the qualities of its members…

What happened then? Is it the sweet `power game` that’s eroding the values that CTP had in the past? Can we lie so easily? And why lie? For whom? For what?

And how about Papadopoulos and his party? We know, from experience that most of the members of DIKO are conservative – they even `refuse` to `pass` to the northern part of the island. What do they think of their own leader now, having `bi-communal contacts in secret` in his house?

Of course Rauf Denktash tried to `save the situation`, saying there was nothing `abnormal` about such contacts! Throughout the years his mission was to attack the bi-communal contacts, punish the leaders of such contacts and this is understandable because his ideology was separation, not reunification. But throughout the years we had always followed the discourse of the `nationalists` on both sides: they always helped each other to keep the `status quo` on the island. Everything had a parallel across the `border` - the people, the politicians, the stories, the half-truths, the slander, the `traitor` jargon, the attacks, the graves, anything and everything you can think of… Otherwise we would not have a divided Cyprus you know, if we did not have the parallels… The parallels worked well for the separation, keeping the `power` on their `own side`… Many times Alecos Constantinides would try to point these out to me: `Look, we have the same situation here but you don’t know` he would say. Sometimes it takes time for the picture in your mind to be totally clear… Just look at the `parallels` of our recent past: We have the `Grey Wolves` and `Hrisi Avgi`, we have the bombing of Eroglu’s house, Talat’s house, Ayios Mammas church and the bombing of Nicos Anastasiades’s house… We have the bombing of KIBRIS newspaper and the threats against ALITHIA during the referendum process since both newspapers were campaigning for a YES. We have the strong `NO` campaign of Papadopoulos and Denktash… We have secret meetings between the son of Denktash, Serdar and Tassos with an addendum from CTP, Omer Kalyoncu… We now have CTP in a coalition in the north and AKEL in the south… Both parties have moved away from a real struggle for reunification towards trying to keep their own `power` and when you’re in such a power-game, it is inescapable that you move away from a `common country` concept towards a concept of `separation` under the guise of `equality`…

If we go back a little bit more in history, we have the attacks of SIMERINI and MAHI and VOLKAN newspapers on the bi-communal groups and if you sit and translate the articles published in these newspapers concerning the contacts among the people, you would think that there is a mastermind of the game and the same person writes the articles in these newspapers, only replacing the word `Turk` with `Greek` and vice versa… But we are so busy with our image in our own mirror that we fail to see the image on the `other side`…

The secret meetings of Tassos with Serdar and Kalyoncu bring these to the surface – that the scenario being written on this island has only one mastermind with different nationalities and different people on both sides to implement it…

When shall we break the mirrors and try to see the whole picture and where this is leading us?

When shall we discover that we can only trust ourselves to sit down and talk, to sit down and listen, to sit down and try to make sense of what’s going on in this island?

When shall we try to see the bigger picture?
