Infant Circumcision: Questions, Answers and Resources

About This Website

This document was designed for American parents-to-be who are undecided about whether or not to circumcise their baby if it is a boy. There are many sites that explain the anatomy of the penis and the precise nature of the surgical procedure in great detail – I’ve listed some of them under the sidebar marked “Links.” This FAQ is a more general discussion of the issue.

I researched and wrote this document when I was pregnant with my first child, a son. I came to believe that circumcision was a not a good thing to do to infants, so this FAQ does not support circumcision. However, a lot of the anti-circumcision material on the Web is very explicit and graphic, and maybe not something that you need to see in order to make your decision. My goal in writing this FAQ was simply to provide answers to some of the most commonly asked questions in a non-upsetting way. There are some links to pictures that may be distressing, but you will see no distressing images on this page.

I urge you to contact me with any comments, questions or concerns you may have about this website or about infant circumcision in general. If you are undecided about circumcision, you are probably dealing with a lot of conflicting messages from your spouse, your parents, and your doctor. It can be very hard to decide to stop doing something that your family or religious group considers a “tradition.” I wish you and your baby all the best, regardless of how you decide.
