Those of you who were hanging around here a year and a half ago probably remember my infamous and extremely short-lived (read: one week) "retirement" from the act of reviewing episodes of NYPD Blue.

Well, it's déjà vu all over again, but this time, I suspect the end result won't be quite the same.

Over the years, I've found it harder and harder to write these reviews. Part of it is a lack of enthusiasm, because it's less fun to watch the show if I'm mentally taking notes for that week's review. But the major reason is simply a lack of free time. Between work, my social life and family obligations, I'm not the free spirit I was when I started doing this as a college sophomore.

After a long summer's thought, I've decided it's time to hang it up, in large part because a very able "successor" (if you can call someone who's already been doing it a while that) has appeared. Amanda Wilson, aka, has been doing wonderful summary/reviews for the last year, with a lot more detail than I've been putting in the past couple of seasons. Amanda will continue posting her reviews to the newsgroup, and I will begin archiving them on my webpage as soon as she finishes them.

In case anyone thinks I'm "jumping ship" because of the departure of Jimmy Smits or the arrival of Rick Schroder, nothing could be further from the truth. Many know that I'm a rare supporter of the Schroder casting. Also, as part of my newspaper TV critic job, I've already seen the first two episodes of the season, and they're dynamite (especially episode two). I just don't have the time or the mental energy to say more than that about them on the Net.

As I alluded to above, I'll still be maintaining the webpage, though recent disk space limitations have forced me to pare it down somewhat (basically, all the pictures are gone), but as long as Amanda's reviewing and Jeff Knapp's FAQing, there'll still be a one-stop shopping site for Blue info on-line. I'll also be hanging about the newsgroup and posting the occasional pithy comment ("Hey, I'm not sure how in-character it was to see Upstairs John whip out an Uzi and blow away the Anti-Crime unit…."), but that'll be the extent of it.

So this is not goodbye, just a rather long-winded introduction to my new siesta.

See you on the Net and in the funny papers…
